While Mount Hallasan captures the hearts of serious trekkers, its grueling 8-to-10-hour round trip can be incredibly daunting if you are looking for a relaxed vacation. Fortunately, you don’t need to endure an all-day endurance test to witness Jeju Island’s most breathtaking panoramic vistas.
Scattered across the island are hundreds of oreums—small, extinct volcanic cones formed by satellite eruptions—and dramatic coastal craters. Most of these can be easily conquered in under 30 minutes, making them perfectly beginner-friendly while delivering massive rewards for photography enthusiasts.
1. Seongsan Ilchulbong (성산일출봉)
The Iconic Ocean Fortress
Rising dramatically out of the eastern sea, Seongsan Ilchulbong—often called "Sunrise Peak"—is a UNESCO World Heritage site formed by a hydrovolcanic eruption thousands of years ago. It looks like a giant, crown-shaped fortress sitting on the water.
While it looks steep from a distance, the path to the top is an incredibly well-maintained wooden stairway. There are plenty of viewing decks along the way where you can pause, catch your breath, and look down at the deep blue ocean wrapping around the jagged coastline.
Hike Time: 20 to 25 minutes to the summit (about 50 minutes round trip).
The Reward: Standing at the observation deck reveals a massive, bowl-shaped green crater spanning over 600 meters in diameter, framed by 99 sharp volcanic rocks around its rim.
Photo Tip: Halfway up the stairs, capture the dramatic, sweeping angle where the thin strip of land connects the volcanic rock formation to the main island.
2. Baekyaki Oreum (백약이오름)
The Pathway to the Clouds
Located on the quiet eastern hills of Jeju, Baekyaki Oreum historically got its name because over a hundred different wild medicinal herbs (baek-yak) naturally grow on its fertile volcanic soil.
What makes this oreum globally famous among travelers is its entrance. A long, beautiful wooden staircase cuts perfectly through a wide, open meadow, stretching straight toward the sky. Walking up feels less like a strenuous hike and more like stepping into a peaceful, cinematic fairytale.
Hike Time: 15 to 20 minutes of gentle climbing.
The Reward: The summit opens up into a circular, stadium-like crater path. Walking along this rim gives you a stunning 360-degree look at the rolling pastures and distant neighboring volcanic cones.
Photo Tip: Stand near the bottom third of the wooden staircase and have your camera partner shoot upward from a low angle to catch the symmetry of the path disappearing into the sky.
3. Saebyeol Oreum (새별오름)
The Golden Sunset Ridge
Shifting over to the western side of Jeju, Saebyeol Oreum stands solitary and proud, named after the lonely morning star (Saetbyeol) because it looks elegantly isolated against the horizon.
This oreum is entirely covered in wild silver grass (억새). While it has a slightly steep incline on the left path, the trail is completely layered with soft straw mats, making it safe and secure for beginners.
Hike Time: 20 to 30 minutes to reach the peak.
The Reward: The absolute best sunset view on the west coast. As the sun dips low over the distant sea, the endless fields of silver grass catch the light, turning the entire mountain into a shimmering, glowing sea of bright gold and copper.
Photo Tip: Time your arrival exactly 45 minutes before sunset. Stand right on the ridgeline, letting the glowing golden hour light illuminate the silver grass all around you for an ethereal back-lit portrait.
