So you’ve found the orange kiosk, scanned your passport, and you're ready to load your card. You pull out your cash, but the machine keeps spitting it back out. Frustrating, right?
While WOWPASS kiosks are high-tech, they have very specific rules about what kind of "paper" they accept. As a local, I've seen many tourists struggle because they didn't know these 4 critical cash rules. Read this before you head to the kiosk!
1. The "15 Currency" Rule (But Only Paper!)
WOWPASS accepts 15 different currencies (USD, JPY, EUR, CNY, HKD, TWD, SGD, etc.). However, there is one major catch: No Coins.
Local Tip: The machines only accept banknotes (paper money). If you have a pocket full of foreign coins, the machine won't take them. Use your coins at the airport duty-free shops instead!
The Exchange Rate: The rate is locked at the moment you insert the cash. It’s generally much better than airport banks, so it’s a smart move.
2. Check Your Bill Denominations (Size Matters!)
This is where most people get stuck. The kiosks do not accept "small" bills for all currencies.
For US Dollars (USD): Only $10, $20, $50, and $100 bills are accepted. If you try to put in $1 or $5, the machine will reject them.
For Japanese Yen (JPY): Only ¥1,000, ¥5,000, and ¥10,000 are accepted.
For Euros (EUR): Usually €10, €20, €50, and €100 are fine.
Korean Won (KRW): If you are topping up with local cash, it accepts ₩1,000, ₩5,000, ₩10,000, and ₩50,000.
3. The "Crispness" Factor (The Sensor is Sensitive)
Korean kiosks are notorious for being picky about the condition of the money.
The Problem: If your bill is heavily creased, folded at the corners, has ink marks, or is slightly torn, the machine will reject it for "security reasons."
Local Hack: If a bill is rejected, try flattening it out on your thigh or the edge of the machine. If that fails, try inserting it upside down or backwards. Sometimes the sensor just needs a different angle!
4. The "Two Pockets" Currency Rule
This is the most important part to remember:
You can load your Shopping Balance using foreign currency (USD, EUR, etc.).
BUT, if you want to top up the T-money (Transportation) pocket at a regular subway machine or convenience store, you MUST have physical Korean Won (KRW) cash. * The Strategy: Use the WOWPASS kiosk to "Withdraw" a small amount of KRW cash from your card balance first, so you have physical coins/notes to load your subway pass.
💡 Pro-Tip: Don’t Insert Too Many Bills at Once
Don't try to shove a thick stack of 50 bills into the slot. The machine can jam. Insert them one by one or in small batches of 5-10 (depending on the specific kiosk model). Take your time—the machine won't time out while you are actively feeding it money.
